Premiere of Handel’s opera »Amadigi di Gaula« at the Theatre Ulm

AUGSBURGER ALLGEMEINE
Fireworks for eye and ear at the Theatre Ulm
Never has soprano Maryna Zubko been seen more evil on the Ulm stage than in this production. She does not play, no, she personifies as a hateful sorceress Melissa in a devilish way the mother of all furies, a hellish woman, delivers vocally as well as acting a masterly performance – and shows poise also in the failure of the demonic plan to destroy the love of Amadigi and Oriana in order to win the knight for herself. Her power ends there – symbolically shown because Zubko no longer wears a wig in the failure of the sorceress – where the spirit of the slain knight Dardano sides with the lovers. For the diabolical action Horstkotte gives her different costumes, one more eye-catching than the other – for instance a black vampire-bat robe.

HEIDENHEIMER ZEITUNG
Maryna Zubko as Melissa was responsible for the dramatic outbursts, which she designed in a way that was both confident and spirited.
